National Kinship Care Month

United States Senators Wyden and Hatch put forward Resolution 266 making September 2015 National Kinship Care Month. The resolution is meant to recognize the grandparents and other relatives who are taking care of 2,700,000 kids who are living with them throughout the country. Kinship caregivers have been proven to provide safer and more stable households for foster youth and allows for a child to maintain the family relationships that are so important during this time of their lives.

The resolution calls on Congress to implement new policies that will have a positive effect on these issues including inadequate funding and services. It also reaffirms the need to continue discussing ways to best use Title IV B and E funding to invest in prevention and reunification and to ensure that extended family members who take on the role of caregiver have the resources they need to properly take care of the youth.
